The Grand interior
Project: Third Year- Summer Studio in Tokyo
Year: 2016
Professor: Arch. Erez Golani-Solomon
Collaboration with Michal Mor
During our stay in Tokyo, we were overwhelmed by the presence of the grand interior which constitutes a significant part of the urban fabric. Our exposure to this complex of interiors emerged as a result of the need for mobility inside the city, mainly since the public transportation system is attached to a multiplicity of programs which covers up basic human needs, in many cases results in prolonged hours of stay inwards and is mostly detached from the outer world. As a result an interior space of large scale arises. It is perceived as a world in itself. This "Grand Interior" is our Extra-Large (XL) in Tokyo.
Our Extra-Small (XS) interventions are interior gardens of different scales which constitute temporal exits from the Grand Interior. Each exit grants a different experience. What puts them together in a series is the presence of elements from the outer world which are composed together in a way that emerges feelings of surprise and mystery. They are all kind of halts inside the bustling Grand interior.
